A heritage coat built for deep winter

Filson’s Lined Mackinaw Wool Packer Coat takes the familiar Mackinaw Cruiser and adds substantial coverage for cold, unsettled weather. The newest version brings back the coat in Timber/Pine Plaid, a green-and-brown pattern drawn from its early twentieth-century roots, with a brown shearling collar. It’s a distinctive update to a design that puts warmth and coverage ahead of a light, streamlined fit.

Filson patented its Mackinaw Wool Cruiser in 1914, naming it for the heavyweight wool at its core. The Packer Coat extends that lineage with added layers and details. Filson says the original design was made for ranchers and horsemen working through extreme winter weather; the current model keeps those practical cues in a warmer, more elaborate package.

The change in color is the headline for this edition, but the coat’s construction is what sets it apart. Its base is the standard Mackinaw Wool Cruiser, supplemented with a cape of extra wool, a lined shawl collar and an eight-ounce flannel interior. That combination makes this a substantial option for people who want a single outer layer with plenty of coverage in cold conditions. The tradeoff is bulk: this is a coat built around insulation and protection, not minimal packing weight or a close-fitting silhouette.

Layered wool and a high collar

The broad shawl collar replaces the Cruiser’s pointed collar. Heavy sheepskin shearling lines it, and the collar can fold up to cover the neck and reach ear height. A leather strap and button hold it upright. That gives the wearer another way to manage coverage when the weather turns, without adding a separate neck layer to the coat’s list of features.

A cape adds a second layer of 24-ounce Mackinaw Wool over the shoulders, then drapes down to mid-chest at the front and back. The sleeves are fingertip length, falling over inset cuffs to help cover the hands. Mackinaw wool naturally resists wind and moisture and retains warmth when wet, according to the source. The extra wool across the shoulders adds another barrier against exposed weather, though the coat’s warmth and coverage don’t remove the need to dress for changing conditions.

Storage for work and travel

The Packer Coat carries over the Cruiser’s pocket layout, with four front pockets arranged in two pairs and fastened with brass snaps. Side-entry hand-warmer pockets sit behind the lower pair, while a slotted utility pocket is stitched over the upper left pocket. A full-width pass-through game pocket spans the back panel and closes with brass snaps at both ends. In total, the coat has eight exterior pockets, giving it a workwear feel and room for small essentials.

Inside, an eight-ounce Alaskan Guide Flannel lining adds warmth and a softer surface against clothing. There’s also a patch pocket on the left chest panel. The back is vented, a detail originally intended to accommodate horseback riding. It may also make the long coat easier to wear while seated, whether that’s in a car, on transit or outdoors during a cold break.

Price and fit for purpose

The Filson Lined Mackinaw Wool Packer Coat in Timber/Pine Plaid is available for $1,199. That price puts it in luxury outerwear territory, so the decision rests on whether the unusual combination of heavy wool, shearling and generous storage suits the way you’ll use it. For someone seeking a lighter coat for everyday layering, its weight and volume may be more than needed. For cold-weather wear where substantial coverage and traditional workwear details are the appeal, those same features are the point.

Filson brought the coat back from its archive for the 2025 winter collection, and this special-edition color gives the design a vintage character without changing its central purpose. The shearling collar, wool cape, long sleeves and flannel lining all reinforce the same idea: a winter coat with coverage built into its shape. At $1,199, it’s a considered purchase, and its appeal will depend on wanting that level of warmth and construction.
