Nissan’s Datsun S30 Concept makes its case through a major mechanical change: the classic 280Z gets the twin-turbo V6 and six-speed manual from the modern Z. Built with Formula Drift champion Chris Forsberg, the project adds upgraded suspension, brakes and driveline parts while keeping the S30’s shape and a distinctly period-inspired look. Nissan hasn’t shared an output figure for the engine, so the build’s appeal rests on its combination of new Z hardware and classic-car character.

A modern Z drivetrain in the original shape

Nissan has recently drawn attention to the Z’s history through details on newer models, including Heritage Edition versions, throwback paint choices and design updates. This concept takes a different route: instead of adapting the new Z’s appearance, it places a modern Z powertrain in the S30, the original Fairlady Z generation that includes the 280Z.

The swap centers on the VR30DDTT twin-turbo V6 and the new Z’s FS6 six-speed manual transmission. Nissan also fitted a NISMO R200 limited-slip differential, a NISMO twin-disc clutch and flywheel, and a Radium Engineering fuel cell with a 10-gallon capacity. Together, those parts give the engine and gearbox a supporting driveline package, though Nissan hasn’t published a full build specification or performance figures.

The engine uses NISMO cold-air intakes, a heat exchanger and a carbon-fiber engine cover, alongside Garrett PMAX turbochargers. Nissan hasn’t said what power the modified setup produces. The stock modern Z engine is rated at 400 horsepower, which offers a reference point for the potential of the swap, but it shouldn’t be read as a confirmed figure for this concept.

Chassis and brakes to match the swap

More power changes what a classic chassis needs to manage, and Nissan has made suspension and braking upgrades part of the package. The S30 receives front and rear coilovers, billet tie rods and sway bars at both ends, along with other suspension changes. Nissan hasn’t provided spring rates, alignment details or a description of how the car is intended to be driven, so the parts list shows the scope of the work without establishing how the setup behaves on the road or track.

Braking hardware includes six-piston Wilwood calipers with 300mm rotors at the front, and four-piston calipers with 280mm rotors at the rear. Those are specific, substantial changes from the original car’s equipment. As with any modified classic, the finished system depends on how its components work together; the available description doesn’t include testing results or stopping-distance claims.

Carbon fiber outside, blue details inside

The exterior keeps the S30’s familiar profile but replaces several body parts with carbon fiber. New pieces include the front fenders, hood, air dam, bumpers, hatch and spoiler. Nissan finished the car in Seiran Blue and fitted NISMO LM-RS6 forged wheels and a NISMO 40th decal set. The result links the recognizable shape to newer performance parts without making the concept look like a modern Z body conversion.

Inside, the build mixes competition-focused equipment with custom trim. OMP Silverstone racing seats, harnesses, a NISMO shift knob, an upgraded steering wheel and a custom gauge set sit alongside matching door cards. That mix is central to the concept’s identity: the cabin signals a performance build, while the color and familiar S30 proportions preserve the connection to the original car.

Nissan says the Datsun S30 Concept will be on display at SEMA Show 2026. For now, the specifications establish the project’s direction, while the missing output figure and driving details leave open how the modified car performs as a whole. The display will give enthusiasts a closer look at a build that puts the original Z’s shape together with the modern car’s engine and transmission.
